Vanity Card #24 - The Freedom Within

Voltaire, also known as François-Marie Arouet  was a smart guy. Of course you wouldn't survive into the history books if you'd be total waste of a life form. I'm looking at you, Kim Kardashian. Joking..kinda. Let's continue, shall we? Voltaire left us with many great quotes, but one specially stuck with me.

"Il est bien malaisé (puisqu’il faut enfin m’expliquer) d’ôter à des insensés des chaînes qu’ils révèrent."

When translated into English, it means "it is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere". This quote has so much power over me. I've always been a stubborn individual, seeing and doing things in my own way. I personally believe the world needs creative minds to present the mundane situations in new perspectives and challenge the things we consider normal in our everyday lives. Just look at the society around you. Are you really happy how it revolves and works around you?

I can honestly say that I'm not that happy with it. I have a small theory. In the far away history we created societies to serve and help us to reach our full potential in life. Somewhere in the dark times we forgot our resolution for what society really stands for and we exchanged our roles. Now we serve the society to reach it's full potential, not the other way around.

I'm not saying that serving the society is a bad thing, it's a vital part of our lives. We live and breathe through our societies, we get our paychecks from it, it supports us with our natural needs like food, water, safety and shelter. But it discourages individualism, it discourages the act of being sincerely happy and express yourself in ways that doesn't unite with the society. Example: If painting full-time doesn't support you financially, you're as good as street cockroaches. In all shortness, I've never heard anyone saying "I wish I could have spent more time working" on their death bed.

Freedom is a just a fancy word if you don't act on it.
